Router Security

A router is a box that sits between your computer and modem. Having a router greatly increases your protection against attacks. A properly configured router will not send any response to hacker probes making it very hard to bypass.

Don't be mistaken that a software firewall will do an equal job because it won't. The problem with a software firewall is that it is still residing on your PC. If your PC gets infected with a trojan it can still open up your computer for attacks. Because a hardware router is independent of your PC it is a far safer option.

An average person gets between 400 and 4,000 probes a week from people looking for ways into PC's. They are not targeting your machine in particular but if it gets a response from your machine you are then more susceptible to further probes to find weaknesses.

There are hundreds of ports your PC uses and a number of these are used regually by you.. A properly configured router will hide [stealth] the ports you need without it affecting your normal web surfing uses.
